March 16th: A Pair of Trumpeter Swans
Today I observed a pair of Trumpeter Swans (Cygnus buccinator)building a nest on the banks of a small pond next to the office were I work in Ann Arbor, MI. This species is protected by the U.S. Migratory Bird Act and is threatened in the state of Michigan. A survey of Trumpeter Swans conducted in 2005 by the Michigan Department of Natural Resouces determined the Michigan population to consist of 728 individual birds. Hopefully, the pair will continue their nesting activities. If they do, I will periodically capture some images (from a distance) to document their progress (see my Birds and other Critter Gallery).
